College Royal and T-shirt Contest Updates

The masses have spoken and the results are in! The winning design for the 2010/2011 GFSC t-shirt contest, as chosen by UofG Food Science students, is none other than Logo Numero Uno! Clothing samples will be in Friday March 18, 2011, for everyone to check out.

All hail the lemony goodness of "The Lemon"
But wait, there's more! College Royal is just around the corner and we're looking for more help! Milkshake Coordinators, Helen and Mike, are looking for volunteers to help with milkshake preparations this Thursday and Friday (March 17th and 18th). As well, College Royal representatives Amanda and Marielle are still looking for volunteers to help out during College Royal. Volunteers are especially needed on Sunday, so come on out and lend a helping hand this weekend and make this College Royal awesome!

And that's not all! The GFSC website can now be reached at the official University of Guelph website, http://www.ouguelph.ca/~foodsci. You can still access the GFSC website through the original www.blogspot.com URL.

GFSC needs your help!

The GFSC is looking for awesome people to help out with College Royal this year! College Royal reps Amanda and Marielle need volunteers to help with arts and crafts, coming up with fun food science trivia, making displays and a few extra special people to work on two Super Happy Fun Time art projects!

We are looking for 1 to 3 people to work on 3 different displays (Sensory Evaluation, Product Development and Food Microbiology) and ARTISTIC people to help with the arts projects, so email Amanda and Marielle to stake your claim on your favourite display or art project!

Descriptions of each display and the Super Happy Fun Time art projects are listed below.

Display 1: Sensory Evaluation
·         Write up the text that goes under each of the following headings:
o   What is Sensory Evaluation?
o   Why is Sensory Evaluation Used?
o   Difference Between Consumer Testing and Trained Panel
o   We have asked Anita to provide us with a small write-up outlining the sensory test that people will be doing. The room will be set up so that people do the sensory test BEFORE they see the display board!

Display 2: Product Development
·         Write up the text that goes under each of the following headings:
o   What is a new food product?
o   How does something go from idea to product?
o   How consumer trends impact new ideas
o   How different parts of the world need/want different types of products (this is to tie in with the samples of food products from around the world we will have on display)

Display 3: Food Microbiology
·         Write up the text that goes under each of the following headings:
o   How microbiology affects food safety
o   Not all "microbes" are bad! (e.g., vinegar, beer, wine, et cetera)
o   How to keep your food safe at home

Super Happy Fun Time Art Project 1: Mural
Design a colouring-book style outline that kind of shows a progression from farm to fork with an emphasis on food scientists doing cool stuff (thanks to Adi for the great idea!)

Super Happy Fun Time Art Project 2: Mad Food Scientist Face Cut-Out Board
The general idea is to have two people (the faces will be cut out holes) in lab coats holding up crazy food and science things (funny coloured/shaped foods, beakers/flasks, et cetera)

Thanks in advance to all the volunteers who will be helping out on these projects!

Food Science Club Meeting - February 15, 2011

News from the latest GFSC meeting:

1. Clothing samples from the manufacturer/distributor will be in today (February 16, 2011) on display in the Undergrad Office. Come check out the samples and decide what you want to buy.

Don't have the colour you want? Looking for something different? Check out the Campus Hoodies website and pick out something unique for yourself and let Clothing Rep, Monica Plona, know and she'll be able to help you out.

And don't forget, the more of one particular style of clothing you buy (i.e., hoodies, yoga pants, et cetera) the cheaper it'll be.

2. College Royal is soon approaching, and the GFSC needs your help! Artists, creative thinkers, and good old fashioned able bodies willing to help should contact College Royal Reps Amanda Wright or Marielle Hirwa if they can help.

And don't forget that we always need help preparing and distributing milkshakes, so if you're willing to help and give it the 'ol college try, contact Milkshake Reps Mike Ioi or Helen Bui to see how you can help out.

3. To all GFSC Executives - Please contact Monica with your size information for clothing

4. Social Coordinator, Reid Berfelz, is organizing one last big social event for sometime after Reading Week. A brewery tour, a wine tour, and a cake decorating competition  are ideas that were tossed around this meeting. Got a better idea or suggestion for this year's last hurrah, or want to choose one of the events already mentioned? Shoot an email over to Reid and let him know what you think.
